ABOUT US

The Groove That Connects Us

When I think about music, I don’t just think about notes or instruments — I think about life.
Music is more than sound; it’s how we express ourselves, connect with others and find our place in the world. Growing up, rhythm was everywhere. My mom would dance while cleaning, filling the house with the sounds of Celia Cruz and El Combo de las Estrellas. The music wasn’t just in the air— it was in the way she moved, the joy, the stories and the feeling that everything was alive. That’s the magic of music that I carry with me today.

Two Teachers, Two Lessons

The first time I truly felt that magic was in fourth grade, when my teacher, Mr. Prime, handed me my first solo for the holiday concert. At just nine years old, I practiced endlessly, feeling a mix of excitement and anxiety. When the moment arrived, the stage wasn’t just a place— it was an experience. The applause, the lights, and the feeling of connection to something greater—it was more than I ever imagined.

But a few years later, in middle school, that spark began to fade. My saxophone, which had once felt like a key to a world of possibility, became something I pushed away. A teacher didn’t see
the same potential I did and I let that rhythm die. For over a decade, I walked away from music.

Though I sang in school choirs, it wasn’t something anyone took seriously. I loved it, but my environment didn’t see music as a path worth pursuing. We were expected to be tough and athletic and that didn’t include pursuing art. It wasn’t until later, when I picked up singing again, that I realized the music had been waiting for me. Singing reignited that spark I had buried.

A Teacher Who Changed Everything

Mrs. Saporito, my ceramics teacher, reignited a part of me I didn’t even realize had dimmed.
One day, as I worked quietly on a project with my earbuds in, she heard me singing. I wasn’t performing for anyone; I was just lost in the moment. But she noticed— and more importantly,
she saw something in me I hadn’t yet seen in myself. Her words of encouragement felt like a spark, lighting a path back to my creativity. For the first time in years, I felt permission to explore
a part of myself that had been dormant.

That moment in her classroom wasn’t just about music— it was about rediscovery. It reminded me that creativity wasn’t just an activity; it was a core part of who I am. From there, everything began to unfold. I started writing music, performing at open mics, and eventually stepping into studios to record. Since then, I’ve collaborated with renowned music producers and award-winning songwriters and I’ve even had the chance to explore writing, acting and dancing and modeling. Each experience expanded my perspective and deepened my passion for expression.

Looking back, I see how a single moment of encouragement can ripple outward, transforming the course of a life. Mrs. Saporito’s belief in me helped me reconnect with my purpose, and it’s that same sense of belief and possibility that I hope to pass on to others.

Shaping My Approach to Teaching

All of these experiences have shaped the way I approach teaching today. My goal is simple: help students discover and embrace their strengths. I focus on what they can do, rather than what they can’t, helping them build self-awareness and confidence. Just as Mrs. Saporito helped me find my inner artist, I aim to do the same for my students.

The Power of the Groove

The lessons I learned from my teachers were simple, yet profound. One showed me the magic that music can bring, and the other taught me the pain of losing it. That’s why I created In the Groove Creative Space. I wanted to build a place where no one is ever pushed away from music—a place where every student can feel the magic I felt when I was nine years old.
